Throwback Thursday - Project Life 2013 Week 8

In order to keep myself motivated to both catch up with this year's Project Life album and finish (and post) last year's album, I've decided to post two spreads per week. I've kind of been doing this already, sporadically, but now I'm giving it some structure. Tuesdays will be the day I post my most recent 2014 spread, and Thursdays (hereafter known as Throwback Thursdays) will be the day I post a spread from my 2013 album...or possibly even an earlier album. So, without further ado...

This week's Throwback Thursday Project Life spread is from just over one year ago: Week 8 of 2013. And it's a big one.

The first part of the week, was fairly normal. Monday was my first rehearsal for Little Shop of Horrors (I played Audrey in our local community theater's production). Wednesday we finalized the refinance of our house (making our monthly payment significantly lower - woohoo!).

Then, Wednesday afternoon we flew to Florida for our annual trip to visit J's grandparents. They are snowbirds who winter in a little town just southeast of Orlando. It's always a great time, and it's a pretty inexpensive vacation for us, since we stay with them for most of the trip.

I actually didn't have a single picture from the part of the week we spent at home, so I used several filler cards and plenty of journaling to fill up the first page of the spread. The lack of pictures on this side was balanced by using a single, 12x12 picture for the other side of the spread. This picture also serves as a sort of introduction to the Florida portion of the week.

Between the two, I added a basic 8.5x11 insert with the Little Shop rehearsal schedule. I wanted to save this bit of ephemera to remind myself how time-consuming the production was, and how it basically dominated my life for the next two months...but it was totally worth it!

The color schemes for the two portions of the week are strikingly different, which seemed fitting for the strikingly different climates. For this first part, I used a lot of pastel and neutral colors.

But for the time spent in Florida I used more vibrant and bright colors. For some reason, Florida just screams neon to me. :)

Our first day there was fairly short, after the flight, getting our rental car, and driving to his grandparents' neighborhood. But we did get to go to Sonny's for supper, which is always a highlight for me! They have amazing BBQ and an impressive gluten-free menu. And I was absolutely starving after finding a serious lack of gluten-free options for our airport lunch.

Day two started with a trip to the local barber shop. J was desperate to shed his beard in the warm weather! Then we hit up a few favorite local markets (of course our favorites are the ones with free beer) and stocked up on food for the week. We also stopped at a few shops and picked up a few fun bits, including J's hat (I'm not sure he took it off the rest of the trip) and a Starbucks cold mug for me. :)

For lunch we stopped at a local authentic Mexican restaurant (almost always an easy gluten-free option), where I proceeded to drink a margarita as big as my head...which led to me hula-hooping in the middle of Walmart - where we went to buy J's grandparents their (belated) Christmas gift: a Weber portable propane grill.

Then it was back to their place to grill up some seriously awesome steaks (and pork chops for me). Oh, and just ignore the "cooked to perfection" caption on the meat picture...clearly it's not & I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking when I wrote it. But I'm leaving it, since it's now a kind of joke in our house. :)

One of my favorite moments captured on this spread was the quote I wrote down from Thursday night, and added to the bottom right pocket above. One of J's favorite parts of our Florida trips is trying out all of the beers we can't get here, and on our second night there he may have been a bit overly exuberant with his sampling. ;)

On day 3 we finally made it to the beach! J's grandpa went with us for a morning walk, and I snapped plenty of pics. Gotta love beach photos!

After our walk we stopped at a bikini bar for a drink. The boys were a little disappointed not to see a single bikini. Then we headed to a local brewery for a tasting. We also bought some beers for what we call "the treasure chest." Since J's grandparents drive their camper down to Florida every fall, they kindly offer to bring back anything we buy down there with them when they return to Indiana in the spring. So we fill a box with beers, ciders, and wines we can't get locally...our treasure chest. It's a fun little present to ourselves come April.

After having lunch back at the camper, we headed north to Cocoa Beach. The brewery there is a favorite of J's. Then we decided it was time for us to do the touristy thing and got to Ron Jon and the Cocoa Beach pier.  Unfortunately, both were a pretty big let-down, but we had a couple drinks and walked the beach a bit and managed to have plenty of fun, despite our surroundings.

On day 4 we went on a new adventure and took A1A south to Vero Beach.

This day was definitely the highlight of our trip. We started at BrewGrrs after Googling bars with a large selection of beers on tap. Then we headed to Mulligan's, which we found Googling for a place where we could eat on the beach.

It was an awesome experience! I had one of the best bloody marys of my life and an amazing shrimp cocktail, all while listening to some great live music. See that tiny little drummer? He was adorable, and also incredibly talented!

After spending some time on the beach, we headed back north to have dinner at The Mansion, which was delicious and may have involved some wine (do you see a trend here?)

Day 5 meant leaving Florida and heading back to freezing Indiana. We said goodbye to the freaking awesome rental car (a Volvo convertible that looked like a transformer when you opened the roof), and boarded our flight home. Sadly, when we got back to our car in the frigid airport garage, the battery was dead. We spent forever trying to get it fixed but ended up just calling a friend to pick us up and take us home, then went back the next day to take care of it. It was a really bad ending to a really great trip.

Most of the products I used are from older collections and are no longer available, but I want to point out a few that you can still get.

Project Life 2013 Week 17

Just moving down the list, checking off week by week... Here's week 17 of 2013:

Spring was just starting to show its colors. I was finished with Little Shop. And life was back to normal.

All-in-all it was a pretty uneventful week. Most of my pictures capture the everyday, mundane details of our lives. Actually, I think I love these weeks the best. They're a real, honest picture of our lives.

I added a bit of hidden journaling on the second page. It details what happened each day of the week, like how we were still dealing with insurance over the flooding in our basement, and how we saw the fox family that lives in our back yard for the first time that year.

Project Life 2013 Week 16

For today's Project Life Tuesday post, I've decided to share another week from last year. I still haven't completed the move into my new craft room, and I still haven't found my mojo for this year's album. It looks like there may be a "my process for catching up with Project Life" post in my future. :)

I'm also still working on putting together a gallery so that you can see all of my Project Life spreads in one place. I've been going back and forth between a couple different ideas, but I hope to have one of them up and running soon.

Now onto this week's spread.

Week 16 was an interesting week. We had torrential rains and one of our basement sump pumps broke, leading to a flooded basement. And it happened the night before we were scheduled to host the cast party for the final Saturday show of Little Shop of Horrors - ugh.

Week 16 was also J's birthday week. We had a small celebration, just the two of us and some Outback. :) Also, the Kinship Genealogy Spring Kit became available in the shop that week (there are still a couple left - you can get one here).

That weekend was the last one for Little Shop. We had a party Friday night after the show, then our party Saturday night (which included karaoke and a basement dance party), and finally the goodbye party after our Sunday matinee. During Sunday's matinee there was a glitch with the sound that left me stranded on stage with the plant puppet and complete silence. It was the longest 10 seconds of my life, but we eventually got through it!

Project Life 2013 Week 23

I realized after my last post that if I'm going to continue to share PL spreads form 2013 and 2014, then I'm going to have to post more than one spread per week or I'll never have time to share them all...duh. So that's what I'm going to do. Maybe two on Tuesdays, maybe more throughout the week...whatever strikes my fancy.

Today's spread is from week 23.

It was the week that the then-new Becky Higgins products finally showed up at my local Hobby Lobby, so it only made sense to use the Kraft edition for this week. This may be the one and only time I have ever used a core kit for an entire spread, without adding papers from other collections.

The "Hello" stamp is one of these $1.00 Studio G stamps from Michaels. It actually said "Hello friend" but I cut the "friend" off. I like it so much better this way. The "Oh Snap" and camera stamps are from this KI Memories set.

The picture of our roses didn't quite fit on the card I wanted to use without covering up the arrow, so I used my exacto knife and cut around the point so the arrow would overlap the picture. The "bloom" stamped there was done using an old American Crafts alpha stamp set and the "date" stamp at the top is from Evalicious. The dog and "woof" stamp on the bottom right is from the Studio Calico Here & There collection

Other than my roller date stamp, the only additional embellishments I used were a few washi tapes (including this one and this one). It's a pretty simple layout compared to my usual style, and I have to say that I kinda like it.

Oh, and one other thing.... In the interest of being honest, I have to admit that this spread isn't actually 100% done. This was the week J went to California for business & extended his trip to do a little sightseeing. I have a whole folder full of ephemera he brought back and photos that he took that need to make their way into this spread somehow. I'm thinking of doing a kind of mini book within the spread...still working out the details though.

Project Life 2013 Week 15

That's right. For this week's Project Life Tuesday post, I'm reaching aaaallll the way back to Week 15 of last year. I've been going through my PL checklist, finishing up some of the weeks I skipped, and I realized that many of my finished spreads never made it to the old blog. So I've decided to gradually show them here. I'm thinking of doing some kind of gallery as well...not sure yet. Thoughts?

Anywho...Week 15 was smack in the middle of our community theater's production of Little Shop of Horrors. Most of my week revolved around rehearsal and showtimes. It was also the week I started dance classes with my friend, Katie. And the week we (finally) filed our taxes.

There was some friend drama during the first part of this week that I wanted to record, but didn't necessarily want it out in the open for everyone to read. So I made the "friends" card on the first page, then added some hidden journaling on a separate card behind it. I used my Jenni Bowlin tab punch to make a pull tab for the hidden card, then stamped the phrase "what a day" with my Amy Tangerine Yes, Please roller stamp.

The papers are all from the PB&J collection by Basic Grey. The labels are a mix of Elle's Studio Lil' Snippets, Martha Stewart file folder labels, and basic white labels from my local big box store.

Project Life 2013 Week 31

For this week's Project Life Tuesday, I'm sharing a catch-up week from 2013. Week 31 was a pretty rough week for me, and because of that I had been avoiding it. I would start working on it, get overwhelmed once again by all of the drama from that week, then put it down and walk away. But last weekend I was determined to finally get it finished. After all, it's just as important to document the bad weeks as it is the good ones - it's real life, and that's what this project is all about.

Not that week 31 was all bad. We had a really fun weekend with friends, grilling out and seeing our local Shakespeare in the Park production (I had friends in the production as well). But it was also the week J totaled his car and the week I went in for a pretty scary doctor's appointment. In the end, both of these things turned out okay, but while they were happening, I was an emotional wreck. So my goal for documenting the week was to create balance. I didn't want to gloss over how stressful the bad parts were, but I didn't want to focus too much on them either.

When going through my pictures from that week, I noticed that I took a lot of photos of the little things around me that made me happy: a butterfly on the flowers I had just planted, a sleepy puppy with funny ears, and my favorite latte mug. I wanted to capture those parts of my week as well as the stressful ones.

I also did a lot of big projects around the house that week. I knew the best way to not let myself obsess over a whole lot of "maybes" was to keep moving and stay busy.

When deciding what products to use for the week, I knew I wanted to keep it pretty light. Dark, saturated colors seemed to add to the doom & gloom I was trying to avoid. Since I had just been working with Here & There by Studio Calico, I decided to pull some of the lighter patterns from that collection. And they just happened to work perfectly with the free printables from ChicTags that I had been dying to use, along with some ChicTags labels I had just picked up. I used my standard Becky Higgins Design A page protector for the left side, but switched it up a bit with a We R Memory Keepers page protector for the opposite side.

Here are few close-ups:

It feels so good to have this week documented and put behind me!
